Check for $30.12½ from the Office of Discount and Deposit written and signed by the Naval officer
Autograph check signed: "D Porter". Black ink and red pencil notations in unknown hand. 1 page, 8x6, with transaction history on verso. Washington, D. C., July 7, 1824. Promissory note for the Office of Discount and Deposit to pay Pichon Davis or bearer $30.12½. During the War of 1812, Commodore David Porter (1780-1843) commanded the Essex, which became the first U.S. naval vessel in the Pacific. He was Commander in Chief of the West Indian squadron that suppressed piracy (1823-1825). Porter was court-martialed and suspended from duty for retaliatory action against Spanish authorities in Puerto Rico (1825-1826). He later served as Commander in Chief of the Mexican Navy from 1826 to 1829. Admirals David D. Porter and David G. Farragut (adopted) were his sons. President Jackson appointed him U.S. Consul General to Algiers in 1830; President Van Buren named him U.S. Minister to Turkey in 1839. Lightly toned. Creased. Black ink notations touch signature. Light tears on right side, which touch handwriting but not signature. Normal cancellation cuts. Ink notes on verso listing out two different receipts and what their payments entailed. Otherwise, fine condition.
