Check signed: "D Porter" in brown ink. 6¼x2. Philadelphia, September 24, 1814. Check payable for $48 to Mr. Moses Porterfield. Commodore DavidPorter (1780-1843) commanded the Essex, which became the first U.S. naval vessel in the Pacific. He was Commander in Chief of the West Indian squadron that suppressed piracy (1823-1825). Porter was court-martialed and suspended from duty for retaliatory action against Spanish authorities in Puerto Rico (1825-1826). He later served as Commander in Chief of the Mexican Navy from 1826 to 1829. Admirals David D. Porter and David G. Farragut (adopted) were his sons. President Jackson appointed him U.S. Consul General to Algiers in 1830; President Van Buren named him U.S. Minister to Turkey in 1839. Very toned and creased.
