RUSH R. WALLACE
As Commander of the US Navy Yard in Newport, he signs an autograph letter to
an engineer in Washington, regarding the death of a paymaster (1884)
Autograph Letter signed: "R. R. Wallace/Cmdr", 1 page, 5½x8¾
Newport, Rhode Island, 1884 June 25. On letterhead of the Hotel Aquidneck
to "Chief Engr/R. L. Harris U.S.N/Washington, D.C." In full: "I
have this day forwarded you a P. Order for 6.90. Assessment for death of
Paymaster Brown. Very respectfully". Rush Richard "R.R." Wallace
(1835-1914), a Naval Academy graduate, was lieutenant commander of the USS
Shenandoah during the attacks on Forts Fisher and Jackson during the
Civil War. He later commanded the US Navy yards at Newport and then at
Washington, D.C. Retiring as a commodore in 1897, he continued to serve on the
Lighthouse Board and the Board of Awards. Vertical fold crease down center.
Bottom edge torn. Ink smudged at ending of letter. Lightly soiled with random
ink marks throughout letter. Ink notes (unknown hand) on verso (no
show-through).
