COMMODORE WILLIAM BAINBRIDGE The U.S. Navy Commander is depicted in this 9½x12 engraving that features his facsimile signature underneath Engraving Unsigned: facsimile signature at bottom “W. Bain bridge on a 9½x12 sheet of paper. Actual image 3½x4½. Underneath in small type: “Engraved by J.W. Jarvis; Engd by G. Parker”. In larger type: “WILLIAM BAINBRIDGE, U.S.N.” William Bainbridge (1774-1833) was a commander of U.S. naval ships early in the new nation's history. He worked on merchant ships as a teenage boy, becoming commander of a ship when he was just 19 years old. His naval career would span decades, but he's infamous for being in command of the first U.S. Navy ship surrendered to an enemy. As commander of the USS Retaliation in the West Indies, two French ships surprised him and his crew, forcing their surrender. Bainbridge served as an officer in three wars: the First and Second Barbary Wars as well as the War of 1812. During the First Barbary War, he and his crew were imprisoned in Tripoli (now a major city in Libya) for 19 months. Light brown stain spots. Right edge worn. Minor creases. Irregular cuts on left edge. Otherwise, fine condition. Image itself in fine condition.
