CONRAD NAGEL
The actor cancels his contract with the William Morris Agency as the
agency has provided no employment for six months
Typed letter signed: "Conrad Nagel", ¾p, 8½x11. Chicago,
Illinois, 1948 June 28. To William Morris Agency, Rockefeller Center, New
York City, N.Y. Begins: "Dear Sirs". In full: "I have
been under contract to your agency for the past year and a half. I have received
no offer of employment from your agency for over six months. Therefore, in
accordance with AFRA (sic) regulations I am hereby giving you notice that
I wish to cancel our contract. I am in no way disappointed with your agency but
it just seems we cannot get together on a deal. I have received only the
greatest courtesy and consideration from all members of your organization with
whom I have had contact, and I only hope that sometime in the future, if you
will take me back, we can be together again. With best wishes. Yours
sincerely." In 1948, Conrad Nagel (1897-1970), who was then a character
actor, appeared in the films Stage Struck and The Vicious
Circle. The following year, he would host the TV series, The Silver
Theater, which he had previously hosted on radio. A stage actor since 1914,
Nagel made his film debut in 1918 and became one of the top matinee idols of
the silent screen. His feature film credits include Little Women
(1918), Quality Street (1927), All That Heaven Allows (1956) and
The Man Who Understood Women (1959, his last film). One of the 36
