CONRAD VEIDT
A photograph of the actor signed to a fan with "all good wishes"
Photograph inscribed and signed: "To/Phil Light/with all/good wishes/Conrad Veidt/1941".
B/w, 8x9¼. Veidt (1893-1943), born Hans Walter Konrad Veidt, was a star of German
silent films, including The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari(1920) and Different from the Others(1919), a pioneering gay rights film with Veidt as the gay protagonist. Veidt fled Germany
in 1933 with his Jewish wife. (He had also named himself as Jewish on German
questionnaires as a form of protest) Veidt found a new niche in British and American films,
playing the very kind of German he detested. Veidt's probably best remembered in the U.
S. as Major Strasser in Casablanca(1942). His other English-language film appearances
included The Spy in Black (1937) and Nazi Agent (1942). He died of a sudden heart attack in
1943, during a round of golf. Pinhead-sized chips on facial image. Pinhole at center of top
margin. Otherwise, fine condition.
