CONSTANCE CARPENTER
ALS sharing some photos with a spouse or close friend
Autograph Letter signed: "Constance", 1 page, 4¼x7. New York, N.Y., 1975 May 8. On personal letterhead to "U. Darling", in full: "Thought you might like these. The large picture was taken last week in the dressing room, nice of Dick to write me so quickly. Blessings & Love - Please phone me soon. Love". English born stage actress Constance Carpenter (1904-1993), the child of a vaudeville family, performed on West End and Broadway stages from the mid-1920s. As she has noted here, she had a lead role in the Rodgers and Hart musical A Connecticut Yankee (1927). Her most important role was that of Anna in The King and I opposite Yul Brynner, beginning as an understudy and taking over the role in 1952 when Gertrude Lawrence died. She played Anna for 620 performances. Carpenter appeared in only three films, all supporting roles circa 1930. This letter appears to be written to a spouse. Carpenter was married four times, and although readily available sources to not give the dates of her marriages, this one was probably sent to Irish songwriter Jimmy Kennedy (1902-1984). Paper clip imprint at center of top edge. Fine condition.
