Inscribed 11x14 sepia photo, citing her role in Connecticut Yankee
Photograph inscribed and signed: "To J. B. McKillen/yours sincerely/Constance Carpenter/'A Connecticut Yankee'". B/w, 11x14. English born stage actress Constance Carpenter (1905-1993), the child of a vaudeville family, performed on West End and Broadway stages from the mid-1920s. As she has noted here, she had a lead role in the Rodgers and Hart musical A Connecticut Yankee (1927). Her most important role was that of Anna in The King and I opposite Yul Brynner, beginning as an understudy and taking over the role in 1952 when Gertrude Lawrence died. She played Anna for 620 performances. Carpenter appeared in only three films, all supporting roles circa 1930. Lightly toned and creased. Corners creased and lightly chipped. Pencil note (unknown hand) on verso. Otherwise fine condition.
