B/w, 6x8½. Photo: Angus McBean. Constance Shacklock (1913-1919) was an
English opera diva and later a stage musical performer. She spent ten years with
the Covent Garden Opera Company (1946-1956), acclaimed for roles including
Brangaene in Tristand and Isolde, Amneris in Aida, and Queen
Elizabeth I in Gloriana. She was the Mother Abbess in the London
stage version of The Sound of Music (1961-1967), after which she
taught singing at the Royal Academy of Music (where she herself had studied).
Shacklock was known for her rousing renditions of Rule, Britannia!,
sung annually on the Last Night of the Proms at the Albert Hall. Corner
worn. Stamp and ink note (unknown hand) on verso. Fine condition.
