CORNEL WILDE and PATRICIA WILDE
The renowned actor signs this check for $25.00 made out to his wife
Check signed: "Cornel Wilde" in blue ink, and endorsed on verso, "Patricia Wilde" in blue ink, 8¼x3¼. June 10, 1947. Check no. 413 drawn on his joint account with then-wife Patricia Wilde (better known by her stage name, Patricia Knight) at Security First National Bank, Los Angeles, California. Payable to his wife as an "Allowance" in the amount of $25. The film career of multilingual Cornel Wilde (1912-1989) took off when he earned a Best Actor Oscar nomination for his role as Chopin in A Song to Remember (1945). Other big roles followed in pictures such as Forever Amber (1947) and The Greatest Show on Earth (1952). Wilde, who produced many of his own films, often starred in historical epics (Constantine and the Cross, 1962). His last starring role was in The Norseman (1978). Interestingly, Wilde gave up a spot on the 1936 U.S. Olympic fencing team to pursue an acting career. In fact, he served as a fencing instructor for the Broadway version of Olivier's Hamlet (1940). Patricia Knight (formerly Patricia Wilde, 1920-2004) was an American stage and film actress and Cornel Wilde's first wife. They were married from 1937 until 1951. She had a notable stage career and at times acted alongside her husband in movies such as Moon Over Mulberry Street (1938). Wilde helped Knight land a few movie roles, including her part in Roses Are Red (1947), but his uncontrollable jealously ultimately ended the couple's marriage. Light surface creases. Toned. Bank processing stamps on verso with light show-through to front, affecting signature. Slightly worn and soiled. Otherwise, fine condition.
