CORNELIA WALLACE
Cornelia Wallace signed this typed letter on her personalized
stationery from Alabama's Executive Mansion to thank the recipient for her
remarks about her and her husband, George Wallace. It was signed in 1973, a year
after George was shot and paralyzed at a campaign rally.
Typed letter signed "Cornelia Wallace". 1 page, 5¼x7¾, on her
personalized stationery from the Executive Mansion in Montgomery, Alabama.
July 16, 1973. Addressed to Ms. Alice Lee Moore, Raleigh, North Carolina.
In full: "Dear Ms. Moore: I appreciate so much your letter of July 10th
and the complimentary remarks you made about the Governor and me. It was kind of
you to express your feelings about us and we both are very grateful. Enclosed is
a picture with our auto-graphs [not included] which I hope you will like. With
every good wish, I am, Sincerely yours, Cornelia Wallace ohg". James E. Folsom
was defeated by George Wallace in the 1962 Alabama gubernatorial race, but that
didn't stop his niece from marrying Wallace. It was the second marriage for
Cornelia Wallace (1939-2009, born in Cornelia Ellis Snively in 1939).
Wallace is mostly remembered for one of the most memorable images of the 1970s:
Cornelia throwing herself over her husband as a human shield after Arthur Bremer
shot him four times at a campaign rally in Laurel, Maryland, on May 15, 1972.
Their marriage broke up in 1978. But she impressed many during the six years
between the shooting and divorce with her loyalty to her husband. She also ran
for the Democratic candidacy for Alabama governor in 1978, but wound up last in
a field of 13 after a listless campaign. Lightly creased. Signature is lightly
smeared, but legible. Paper clip impression on left edge. Otherwise in fine
condition.
