CORNELIUS RYAN
Extremely rare letter from the popular World War II author, writing to a fan and thanking him for his kind remarks, and informing him of his newest book due to be released in 1965
Typed letter signed: "Cornelius Ryan", in blue ink, 7¼x10½. August 24, 1964. In full: "Dear Mr. Calow, Many thanks for your kind remarks in your letter of August eighteenth. They are sincerely appreciated. I am happy to fulfill your request, and extend you my very best wishes. Cordially". Post script: "I trust you will also enjoy my new book, "The Last Battle", due to be published early 1965 - the writing of which is driving me mad at this particular moment!!". Author Cornelius Ryan (1920-1974) was best known for his journalistic pieces and novels based on World War II, beginning with covering the air war in Europe. More popular of his works is The Longest Day: 6 June 1944 D-Day, which retold the story of the D-Day Invasion of Normandy from his own World War II notes. The book was later turned into a film of the same name, which became an award winning movie. Later in life, Ryan was awarded the French Legion of Honor and an honorary Doctorate of Literature from Ohio University, with the school now housing the Cornelius Ryan Collection. Toned. Normal mailing folds. Light surface creases. Corners lightly worn and creased. Faint pencil note on top right margin. Pencil notes (unknown hand) on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
