CORNELIUS VANDERBILT II
Cornelius Vanderbilt II signs a rare stock certificate number 23 for 1,000 shares at fifty dollars a share.
Rare Stock Certificate signed: "C. Vanderbilt" as Treasurer and "William Wallace" as President of the Beech Creek, Clearfield and South Western Railroad Company, 1p, 11x7. New York, 1883 August 10. Certificate No. 23, certifying "that L.A. Robertson is entitled to One Thousand #(1,000)# Shares in the Capital Stock of the Beech Creek, Clearfield and South Western Railroad Company...." Shares were $50 each. In the year he signed this stock certificate, Cornelius Vanderbilt II became the Chairman of the Board of the Michigan Central and the New York Central and Hudson River Lines. The Michigan Central was part of the New York Central System acquired by Cornelius' grandfather, "Commodore" Cornelius Vanderbilt. The railroad network grew to over 10,000 miles reaching from Montreal, Boston and New York to Michigan's Straits of Mackinac, Chicago and St. Louis. Two years later, in 1885, Vanderbilt became head of the family empire and Chief Director of its investments and philanthropic activities. Lightly creased with folds, vertical fold touches the "ac" of Wallace and nicks his middle initial, which is obliterated by cancellation hole. Cancellation holes also at the "C.V", "de" and "lt" of Vanderbilt's signature and the "Wi" of William. Cancellation stamp at upper margin. Slightly soiled, lightly stained at left border and upper right portion. Nicked at upper right edge. Overall, fine condition.
