American baritone Cornell MacNeil (1922-2011) began his career on Broadway in The Consul (1950), made his debut with the New York City Opera in La traviata (1953) and at the Metropolitan Opera in 1959 as Rigoletto. He was named President of the American Guild of Musical Artists in 1969. In all, his career at the Met spanned 642 performances in twenty-six roles; his last performance at the Met was in 1987 as Baron Scarpia in Tosca, a role he performed 92 times over nearly 30 years (second only to his Rigoletto, which he performed 104 times).
