COUNT MARSHAL GEORGE CHARLES "III EARL OF LUCAN" BINGHAM - AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED 02/15/1862 - HFSID 24029

GEORGE CHARLES BINGHAM, III EARL OF LUCAN

The III Earl of Lucan pens a letter dated on February 15, 1862

Autograph Letter Signed: "Bingham" in iron gall ink. 4½x7. Two pages. Handwriting can't be deciphered. Field Marshal George Charles Bingham, III Earl of Lucan (1800-1888) styled Lord Bingham before 1839, was a British Army officer. He was hated by the Irish because of his intolerant behavior as a land owner during the Great Famine in the late 1840s. He was one of three men, along with Captain Nolan and Lord Raglan, responsible for the fateful order during the Battle of Balaclava in October 1854 which led to the Light Division commander, the Earl of Cardigan, leading the fateful Charge of the Light Brigade. He also made an important contribution in Parliament when he came up with a solution which allowed Jews to sit there. Bingham was subsequently promoted to field marshal despite the debacle at Balaclava. On December 24, 1858 Lucan was promoted to Lieutenant General and having become colonel of the 1st Regiment of Life Guards on February 27, 1865 he was promoted to General on August 28, 1865. He formally retired in October 1877 but after some lobbying he was promoted to field marshal on June 21, 1887. He died at 13 South Street, Park Lane, London on November 10, 1888 and was buried at Laleham in Middlesex. Lightly toned. Multiple mailing folds. Otherwise, fine condition.
