In 1979, New Yorker Curtis Sliwa founded the Guardian Angels, a volunteer organization to combat crime in the City's subways. Guardian Angels with their signature red berets now have chapters in 82 cities worldwide. Sliwa has admitted that he fabricated some crime stories in the early years to bring attention to his organization. In 1992, Sliwa was seriously injured in a shooting which many blamed on reputed mob boss John Gotti, Jr. Gotti was put on trial three times, resulting in three hung juries, but a Gotti associate, Michael Yannotti, was imprisoned on related charges. Sliwa, a friend of former Mayor (and recent Presidential candidate) Rudy Giuliani, co-hosted a popular morning radio talk show. Sliwa is an enthusiastic advocate of the urban sport of stickball, and of competitive eating contests. (He holds the world record of consuming 4¾ pounds of pickles in 10 minutes. Fine condition.
