Autograph letter signed "Cynthia Rathbone". 2 pages, 5¾x7½, one sheet, front and verso. Dated "Monday, May 11". In full: "Dear 'Sandie', Many, Many, thanks for the lovely [illegible] and desk pen. I was so surprised to receive it, and it was very sweet of you to think of me. Daddy is away in Kansas now, but will be back tomorrow. He is replacing Raymond Massey in 'J.B.' here on Broadway on June 1st, so I'm afraid we will not get around to doing summer stock this summer. I am working as a commercial artist in and advertising agency here now, and I lover every minute of if. We are all well here,and hope that you and your mother are too. Both Mother and Daddy join me in sending our fondest wishes. Again many thanks for these very nice gifts. As Always,". Lightly toned and creased. Show-through touches signature and body of letter. Folded in half and unfolded. Otherwise in fine condition. Accompanied by: Autograph envelope unsigned. Purple ink notations on verso in unknown hand. 6x4. Addressed to Miss Mary Sandman, Roxbury, Massachusetts. Two purple-and-white 4-cent Abraham Lincoln stamps affixed. Envelope is open and empty. Normal postal stamps. Lightly toned and creased. Address is lightly smeared in places but legible. Cut open at top edge. Otherwise in fine condition. Cynthia Rathbone (1939-1969) was the adopted daughter of Basil Rathbone and his second wife Ouida Bergere. She outlived her father by about two years.
