CYRANO DE BERGERAC MOVIE CAST: JOSÉ FERRER and MALA POWERS
Black and white publicity photograph of José Ferrer and Mala Powers in a scene from Cyrano De Bergerac.
Photograph signed: "José Ferrer" and "Best Wishes/Mala Powers". B/w, 10x8. José Ferrer stars in this 1950 romance as Cyrano, a 17th-century French cavalier, poet and swordsman whose prominent nose is the subject of many a duel. He is in love with the beautiful Roxanne (Mala Powers). She is also loved by the handsome Christian who can't seem to express his feelings. Cyrano agrees to help him win Roxanne by feeding him the right words for his courtships and love letters. Years later, the deception is revealed, and Cyrano dies happily in the arms of his beloved Roxanne, who realizes that she really loved Cyrano all along. JOSÉ FERRER (1912-1992) won the 1950 Academy Award for Best Actor for reprising his 1947 Tony Award winning title role in this film. He had previously been nominated for a Best Supporting Actor Oscar as the Dauphin in Joan of Arc (1948) and would be nominated again for Best Actor in 1952 for his portrayal of painter Toulouse-Lautrec in Moulin Rouge. While both roles definitely enhanced his career, he later complained that they lead him to become typecast, and sometimes went years between film offers. A radio and stage actress since early childhood, MALA POWERS, born in 1931, was discovered by Ida Lupino who starred Powers in her 1950 film Outrage. That same year, she was signed to star opposite Ferrer in this film. Powers was praised for her beauty, sensitivity and naturalness in portraying Cryano's great love, Roxanne. It remains her best-known film. After a life-threatening illness nipped her career in the bud, Powers spent the majority of her subsequent career appearing in low budget Westerns and adventure films due to difficulty in obtaining production insurance. Lightly creased. Fine condition.
