CYRIL CUSACK
Shown as a waiter in a TV play, he writes on verso, "This ... is a far
cry from Romeo!" (4¾x6¾ image)
Autograph Note on Photograph signed twice: "Mike Le
Mieux/from/Cyril Cusack" and on verso "10 Nov '78/This (You Can
Never Tell - BBC)/is a far cry from Romeo - 30 odd/years earlier. It may not
please/you but you may find it amusing./Cyril Cusack". B/w, 4¾x6¾. Born
in South Africa and raised in Ireland, Cyril Cusack (1910-1993)
performed on Irish stages from age 7. Too short for most leading man
roles, he played very recognizable character roles in a 75-year film career.
He was "Control" in The Spy Who Came In From the Cold, the Captain in
Farenheit 451 and Lord Castlewelland in My Left Foot. He had a
rare title role as Galileo (1968). His pictured role is from
the 1977 BBC teleplay You Can Never Tell. Cusack had his own stage
company in the late 1940s, performing in Ireland, New York and Paris. He was
offered the role of Doctor Who in 1963, and turned it down. Ink very
slightly smeared on front, but legible. Fine condition.
