The prominent stage and screen acting figure signs his name in black ink
Autograph sentiment signed: "Yours faithfully/ Cyril Maude" in black ink. 3¼x1½ card. Cyril Maude (1862-1851) was an English actor and manager, whose performing career began in Denver, Colorado in 1883, before returning to Britain in 1886 as a co-manager of the Haymarket Theatre in London where he became known for his quietly humorous acting in many parts. He went into management for himself in 1906 when he opened the Playhouse, where his role as "Grumpy", a spoilt old man who as a retired lawyer solved a crime to keep his loved ones happy, became one of his most popular roles, and which he took on tour in Australia. In 1923 he toured America alongside Lydia Bilbrook and Mabel Terry-Lewis in If Winter Comes in Chicago and New York. He furthermore starred in many films including Beauty and the Barge (1914), Grumpy (1930), These Charming People (1931), Orders Is Orders (1934) and While the Sun Shines (1947). He also served as President of the Actors' Orphanage Fund, establishing the first orphanage for actors' children in Croydon. Toned. Corners rounded. Ink slightly smeared. Slightly soiled. Mounting residue on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
