Newly elected Governor of Michigan, he signs a typed letter declining an
invitation to a Republican event in New York.
Typed Letter signed: "C. G. Luce/Governor", 1 page, 8x10½. Lansing,
Michigan, 1887 January 26. On official letterhead to James S. Lehmaier, New
York City. In full: "Your kind invitation under date of January 20th
at hand, and it is with many regrets that I ask to be excused from attendance.
Official business will necessitate my presence in this state at that time. Were
it possible for me to accept, I should be afforded great pleasure in so doing.
Sincerely yours". Cyrus Gray Luce (1824-1905), a veteran Republican state
legislator, served two terms as Governor of Michigan (1887-1891). Normal
mailing folds. Three filing holes at left edge. Otherwise, fine
condition.
