CYRUS FIELD. Manuscript Letter signed: "Cyrus W. Field", 1
p, 5½x9. New York, N.Y., 1885 February 26. On letterhead of the
Washington Building to General W. F.Smith. In full: "I shall be glad
to see you at this office if you will kindly call when passing. I remain very
truly your friend". Cyrus West Field (1819-1892), who amassed a fortune in
the paper business, was chiefly responsible for the laying of the first
submarine telegraph cable between the U.S. and Europe (1857-1866). In
1877, he resuscitated the New York City elevated system, which had been founded
in 1870. The first urban rapid transit system in the U.S., it finally became
popular in 1878. Slightly soiled. Separations at both horizontal folds, one of
which crosses tail of "C" in signaure, have been neatly silked on verso.
Mounting adhesive remnants show through faintly at left and right edges.
