p, 5¼x8. New York, 1877 December 11. To Geo. E. Waring, Jr., Newport,
Rhode Island. In full: "Please inform me when you expect to be in New
York, as when here I wish to have you spend a day with me at my country place at
Irvington-on-the-Hudson, & consult with you in regard to drainage &
other matters. Remain, My dear Sir Yours very Truly." Field (1892-1892), who
amassed a fortune in the paper business, was chiefly responsible for the
laying of the first submarine telegraph cable between the U.S. and Europe
(1857-1866). In 1877, he resuscitated the New York City elevated system,
which had been founded in 1870. The first urban rapid transit system in the
U.S., it finally became popular in 1878. Signature slightly smudged at "W".
Horizontal fold crosses signature. Otherwise, fine condition.
