Postcard Photograph signed: "Clara Butt-Rumford". Colorized b/w, 3½x 5¼. Printed caption at lower edge: "Clara Butt & baby". English contralto Clara Ellen Butt (1872-1936) made her professional debut in 1892, praised by George Bernard Shaw and others. She sang in two operas, but was primarily a concert performer. She made many recordings, including some sung in a wheel chair during her long struggle with cancer. Her powerful voice earned the sobriquet, "Voice of the Empire," and admirers claimed her songs would carry across the English Channel. She performed by command for three monarchs: Victoria, Edward VIII and George V. Edward Elgar composed "Sea Pictures" with her in mind, and she was the first to perform several of his works. Butt married baritone Kennerley Rumford in 1900, and the couple gave many joint recitals. They had three children, two of whom died tragically. She was made a Dame Commander of the British Empire in 1920 for her charity work during World War I. Soiled, torn, creased. Repair tape on verso.
