ROSE MACAULAY
Signed autograph letter (1824) declining to answer some questions
Autograph Letter signed: "Rose Macaulay", 2 pages (front and verso), 4½x7. Wedgerley End, Beaconsfield, (England), 1924 August 11. On personal letterhead to "Dear Mrs. Milbrae". In full: "I am really sorry to say no to your request, but I can never answer these questions, I'm no good at it. I always admire the answers of others, from a respectful distance. So I think this strand must leave me out. I'm so sorry, I hate to seem disobliging: I'm not, only stupid, so forgive me. Yours sincerely". English author Emilie Rose Macaulay (1881-1958) wrote 35 books, mostly novels but also travelogues and a biography of John Milton. Her most critically acclaimed novel was her final one, The Towers of Trebizond (1956), a semi-autobiographical tale on the theme of reconciling adultery and religious faith. She was made a Dame of the British Empire shortly before her death. Fold crease, not near signature. Fine condition.
