EMMA ALBANI. Photograph signed: "Emma Albani Gye/1902". Sepia, 4¼x6½ overall, image 4x5¾ (two surfaces). "Madame Albani." imprinted on mount beneath image. Photograph by "The London Stereoscopic Company/Photographers/to Her Majesty" (imprint on verso). Albani was married to Ernest Gye, the son of Frederick Gye, the manager of Covent Garden when the singer had made her debut there in 1872, from 1878 until his death in 1925. Born Marie-Louise-Cecile-Emma Lajeunesse in Quebec, Emma Albani (1850-1930) was the first Canadian-born opera singer to achieve international fame. Proficient as a pianist, organist, harpist and composer as well as a singer, Albani, who had already sung for the Prince of Wales in Canada in 1860, made her grand debut as Amina in La Sonnambula in Sicily. She had a triumphant season in Malta (1870-1871) before she debuted at Covent Garden, where she would star for twenty years, in 1872. Albani, who became known all over the world, was a favorite of Queen Victoria and sang at her funeral in 1901. In addition to her operatic works, Albani was popular for the oratorio festivals at which she starred. She detailed her illustrious career, which included singing for the Tsar of Russia and the President of the U.S., in her autobiography, Forty Years of Song. Ink lightly spread, light but legible at "ani". Background is lightly soiled and scratched. Chipped at edges and lower portion of mount. Taped at perimeter of verso (no show through). Overall, fine condition for a photograph of its age.
