ETHEL MARY SMYTH
Smyth signed and sent this blank French postcard to Alice F. Clarke with the message "So glad you liked the Mass!"
Postcard signed "So glad you/liked the Mass!/Ethel Smyth" in purple ink. 3¼x5½ with 3¼x1¼ bio affixed at bottom. Blank French postcard addressed to Miss Alice F. Clarke, Kensington, London, England. Smyth (1858-1944, born in London, England) was an English composer and leader of women's suffrage. She studied music in Leipzig, Saxony, Germany and started her musical career writing traditional works like chamber pieces and operas, including her most well-known opera The Wreckers. She joined the Women's Social and Political Union (WPSU) in 1910 and gave up music for two years to devote herself to getting women the right to vote. Smyth wrote the music for the suffrage anthem The March of the Women, with words by Cicely Hamilton. The WPSU was a militant suffrage group, and Smyth served two months in prison for breaking the windows of anti-suffrage politicians with 108 other WPSU members. She was named a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1922. Lightly toned. Signature is lightly smeared. Bio is separating from postcard and leaving adhesive residue. Otherwise in fine condition.
