Respected British actress Judi Dench, born Judith Olivia Dench in 1934, has been nominated for numerous acting awards, winning three British Academy of Film and Television Arts Awards (A Room With a View, 1986; A Handful of Dust, 1988; and Iris, 2001),an Oscar (Shakespeare in Love, 1998), seven Laurence Olivier Awards for acting (Macbeth, 1977; Juno and the Paycock, 1980; Pack of Lies, 1984; Antony and Cleopatra, 1987; Absolute Hell, 1996; and A Little Night Music, 1996) and a Tony Award (Amy's View, 1999). In 1988, Dench was made a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire. Dench began a prolific stage career with a critically acclaimed performance as Hamlet's Ophelia with the Old Vic Company and made her first of over 80 TV, movie and video game appearances with the title role in the TV series Hilda Lessways (1959).
