Autograph Letter Signed: "Judith Anderson" on 1981 October (note on back) 5¾x7¾. In
Part: "Dear Mr. McClelland/I am terribly sorry that I cannot be of help to you - I have no
recollection of any incident that occurred during the filming of King's Row with President
Reagan…Sorry/Sincerely". Australian-born stage, screen and television actress JUDITH
ANDERSON (1897-1992), born Frances Margaret Anderson, was an acclaimed
Shakespearean actress often cast in villainous roles. She was nominated for the Best
Supporting Actress Academy Award for her role as Mrs. Danvers, the obsessed housekeeper
in the 1940 Hitchcock film, Rebecca. Her other film roles included the wicked stepmother of
Jerry Lewis (Cinderfella, 1960), a Sioux matriarch (A Man Called Horse, 1970) and a Vulcan
priestess (Star Trek III, 1984). Anderson, who made her television debut in 1951 (Pulitzer
Prize Playhouse), appeared in a number of early TV anthology series, and she had guest
starring roles on such series as Hallmark Hall of Fame (six episodes from 1954-1969) and
Santa Barbara (recurring role as Minx Lockridge, 1984-1987). Anderson was named Dame
Commander of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth II in 1960. Normal mailing folds.
