JUDITH ANDERSON A vintage 3½x5¾ candid photograph of the actress shown wearing a long fur and a scarf around her head, acquired from the collection of Francis and Violet Zane Photograph signed: "Judith Anderson", in blue ink, B/w 3½x5¾. Australian-born stage, screen and television actress Judith Anderson (1897-1992), born Frances Margaret Anderson, was an acclaimed Shakespearean actress often cast in villainous roles. She was nominated for the Best Supporting Actress Academy Award for her role as Mrs. Danvers, the obsessed housekeeper in the 1940 Hitchcock film, Rebecca. Her other film roles included the wicked stepmother of Jerry Lewis (Cinderfella, 1960), a Sioux matriarch (A Man Called Horse, 1970) and a Vulcan priestess (Star Trek III, 1984). Anderson, who made her television debut in 1951 (Pulitzer Prize Playhouse), appeared in a number of early TV anthology series, and she had guest starring roles on such series as Hallmark Hall of Fame (six episodes from 1954-1969) and Santa Barbara (recurring role as Minx Lockridge, 1984-1987). Anderson was named Dame Commander of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth II in 1960. This photograph is from the collection of Francis and Violet Zane, Hawaii natives who moved to California in the 1920's. Francis Zane had a job at the historic Curran Theater and the San Francisco Opera House, which is where he began his massive collection, with photographs and materials ranging from the 1920's to 1960's. The location and luck of his occupation would land him smack dab in the middle of the celebrity world, allowing him to capture some of the most unique and interesting pieces of Hollywood History. Edges decoratively cut. Corners lightly worn and creased. Lightly bowed. Fine condition.
