New Zealand soprano Kanawa, born Claire Mary Teresa Rawstron in 1944, became an overnight sensation with her debut as the Countess in Le Nozze di Figaro at Covent Garden in 1971. She has performed her repertoire of the major operatic heroines in the leading opera houses of the world, including La Scala, the Paris Opera, the Sydney Opera House and Covent Garden as well as New York's Metropolitan Opera (she debuted there as Desdemona in Othello). On July 29, 1981, Te Kanawa sang Let the Bright Seraphim at the wedding of Prince Charles and Princess Diana, a performance that was broadcast to an estimated 600 million people around the globe. In addition to performing, Te Kanawa has recorded a number of albums, from operatic arias to popular melodies, including the works of Jerome Kern and George Gershwin, to Christmas carols and songs of her Maori ancestors. She was created Dame of the British Empire in 1982. Ink lightly beaded. Lightly worn at upper edge. Fine condition.
