1942", 5½x3½ sheet of paper. Dame Lilian Braithwaite (1873-1948) was
an English actress born in Ramsgate, Kent. After marrying actor Gerald
Lawrence she made her first professional appearance in a London performance
of As You Like It. In 1927 she played the character, Lady
Berwick, in Alfred Hitchcock's film When Boys Leave Home. Her greatest performance may have been on
stage in The Vortex (1925-1926) which ran for five months at the
Arthur Miller Theatre on Broadway. During World War II she served as a
chairman of the hospital division for the Entertainment National Service
Association and was made Dame Commander of the British Empire in
1943. Lightly frayed at bottom edge. Otherwise, fine condition.
