Maggie Smith sends a typed letter of thanks for the letter from a
fan.
Typed Letter Signed: "Maggie Smith", 1p, 7x8¼. I.C.M. Ltd.,
London, 1984 October 19. To: Mr. Todd Axelrod. In full: "Thank you
for your letter. I enclose a signed photograph [not included] of myself
as MRS. MILLAMANT in WAY OF THE WORLD by William Congreve, which was performed
at the Chichester Festival Theatre in Sussex from 1st August to 29th September
1984. It is transferring to the Haymarket Theatre in London and will run for a
limited season there from November 6th. Yours sincerely." Smith received her
earliest acting training at the Oxford Playhouse School. She has won Oscars
for The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie (1969) and California Suite
(1978), and British Film Academy awards for A Private Function (1985),
A Room With a View (1986), and The Lonely Passion of Judith Hearne
(1987). She also took more serious roles in Richard III (1995),
Washington Square (1997), and Tea With Mussolini (1999). On a
lighter note, her role in director Robert Altman's Gosford Park earned
Smith her sixth Oscar nomination. Made a Dame Commander in 1989, Smith was
elected to the Theatre Hall of Fame in 1994. Slightly creased. One inch line
of white-out applied above salutation. Otherwise, fine
condition.
