NINETTE DE VALOIS
Rare signature of the English ballet pioneer, on a small card.
Signature: "Ninette de Valois", 4x2½. Ninette de Valois (1898-2001) danced with the Ballets Russe from 1923. Convinced that Britain needed its own national ballet, and that the only way to foster one was to develop a system from training to stage, she opened her first ballet school in London in 1926. In the early 1930s, with the help of Lillian Bayliss of The Old Vic, she bought the old Sadler's Wells Theatre. Soon she had attracted a corps of talented teachers and students. By 1934, the new theatre and ballet school were in full operation, producing classical ballets, many choreographed by De Valois. Retired from 1963 but still a major force in English ballet, she was named a Companion of Honour, one of her many laurels, in 1981. Fold on right margin. Right and top edge frayed. Corners lightly worn and creased. Stained on corners. Lightly toned. Signature slightly faded, but legible. Otherwise, fine condition.
