SYBIL THORNDIKE
Handwritten letter signed as "Sybil Thorndike Casson," written during her last Broadway performance (a Tony-nominated one), half a century after her first role there
Autograph Letter signed: "Sybil Thorndike Casson", 1 page, 5¼x7¼. Bijou Theatre, New York, undated, but circa 1957. In full: "Thank you, kind Sir & Mrs. Waner for your really charming letter. It did cheer us so. Sincerely yours". A stage actress well versed in Shakespeare, DameSybil Thorndike (1882-1976) portrayed such characters as Medea, Lady MacBeth, Queen Victoria and Joan of Arc. George Bernard Shaw is said to have written St Joan (1924) with Thorndike in mind for the part. Her occasional films included Dawn (1928), Major Barbara (1941), Nicholas Nickleby (1948) and Melba (1952). She was married for 60 years until his death in 1969 to actor/director Lewis Casson, with whom she had 4 children who all became actors. Thorndike, who had made her first Broadway appearance in The Merchant of Venice in 1907, appeared in Graham Greene's The Potting Shed at the Bijou Theatre (January-June 1957). Dame Sybil was nominated for a Tony for this performance in a play which also had a starring role for her husband, Lewis Casson (hence the "us" in the letter). Normal mailing folds. Lightly creased. Otherwise, fine condition.
