A stage actress well versed in Shakespeare, Dame Sybil Thorndike (1882-1976) portrayed such characters as Medea, Lady MacBeth, Queen Victoria and Joan of Arc. George Bernard Shaw is said to have written St Joan (1924) with Thorndike in mind for the lead. ETTING (1897-1978) was a popular American torch singer who recorded over 200 songs between 1926 and 1937. She appeared on radio, Broadway musicals and a few films. Her best known songs included "Ten Cents a Dance" and "Love Me Or Leave Me". An unusually realistic film for the time, Love Me Or Leave Me (1955), was based on her stormy life and earned eight Oscar nominations. Light surface creases. Corners and edges lightly worn.
