Englishactress Wendy Hiller (1912-2003) preferred theater to film,
performing on London and Broadway stages for over half a century, beginning with
Love on the Dole (1934) and concluding with the West End production of
Driving Miss Daisy (1988). She was a favorite of George Bernard Shaw,
who wanted her cast in his plays and films. (As Eliza Doolittle in
Pygmalion (1938), she became the first British actress in a British film
to be nominated for an Oscar.) She won an Oscar as Best Supporting Actress for
Separate Tables (1958), and received a third nomination for A Man for
All Seasons (1966). She became an Officer of the British Empire in 1971,
a Dame Commander of the Empire in 1975. Fine condition.
