An attorney and Army veteran, Coats then served as a U.S. Senator (1988-1999) and U.S. Ambassador to Germany (2001-2005). Coats was considered one of President George W. Bush's top choices for Secretary of Defense, a post that went to Donald Rumsfeld. Lightly creased with folds, lower horizontal fold at the upper loop of the "D".
