Dana Andrews, Linda Darnell, Phyllis Kirk, and Jerry Lewis sign a piece of paper for a fan.
Signatures: "Phyllis Kirk/(Warm Wishes/(not an afterthought)" and "Dana Andrews" and inscribed signatures: "Dear George -/At long last!/God bless you!/Linda/Darnell/May 16/57" on front and inscribed signature: "George:/thank you so much for/working with me/'on your day off' -/affectionately/Jerry Lewis/5-25-57", 2p, 7¾x10, front and verso. Captioned magazine photographs of each of the signers on front affixed at right margin next to signatures, magazine photograph, b/w, 1½x2¼, of Lewis and separate caption affixed at lower margin on verso. DANA ANDREWS (1909-1992) appeared in such films as The Ox-Bow Incident (as the innocent lynching victim, 1943), Laura (1944), The Best Years of Our Lives (1946) and Airport 1975. He also starred in the television series, Bright Promise (1969-1970), and Andrews made a number of made-for-TV movies. Andrews was President of the Screen Actors Guild from 1963-1965. Actress LINDA DARNELL (1923-1965) scored a personal triumph in 1944's September Storm, and she starred in the much-sought-after leading role in 1947's Forever Amber. Darnell then appeared in two of her best roles -- Paul Douglas' "wrong side of the tracks" wife in A Letter to Three Wives (1949) and Richard Widmark's racist girlfriend in No Way Out (1950). Tragically, Darnell died in 1965 of severe burns suffered in a house fire. Ironically, she had a lifelong fear of dying in flames, speaking publicly of her phobia after appearing in a "burned at the stake" sequence in the 1946 film, Anna and the King of Siam. Screen and television actress PHYLLIS KIRK (1929-2006), born Phyllis Kirkegaard, a Hollywood leading lady of the 1950s, is best known for her Emmy Award-nominated role as Nora Charles on the NBC television series, The Thin Man (1957-1959). A former model, she was a contract player for both M-G-M and Warner Bros., appearing in films from 1950 (Our Very Own) to 1957 (The Sad Sack), most notably in the Vincent Price thriller, House of Wax (1953). Kirk found her greatest success on television, however, beginning with appearances on early TV anthologies to guest starring roles on a number of series. Also an interviewer, writer and social activist, she made her last appearance on the TV series, The F.B.I., before retiring in 1970. Born in 1926 to comedian parents, comedian and actor JERRY LEWIS first achieved fame as part of a comedy duo with singer Dean Martin from 1946-1956. Disliked by many U.S. critics, but revered in Europe (and by many American fans) as a comic genius, Lewis starred in such films as Jumping Jacks (with Martin, 1952), The Geisha Boy (1958), The Nutty Professor (1963), The King of Comedy (1983) and Funny Bones (1995). He has also directed several of his films, and Lewis is well known as the host of annual Labor Day telethons for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. Lightly creased. Lightly shaded at lower portion of front, touching the date and three words of Darnell's writing, shaded at lower portion on verso. Page numbers written (unknown hand) in ink at lower right corner of front and lower left corner of verso. Irregular left edge from removal from bound book. Overall, fine condition.
