DANIEL BEARD. Autograph Letter signed: "Dan Beard", 1p, 8x10. Flushing, L.I., 1902 March 19. On personal letterhead to "My Dear Mr Funnell". In full: "Allow me to say on behalf of my sister Lina Beard that the tin type arrived all O.K. Both Lina and Adelia B. Beard are in Florida at present time but will return about April 1st to finish up a new book that are at work upon for Chas Scribners sons, or more properly speaking to be published by Chas Scribners Sons. Hastily yours." Daniel C. Beard (1850-1941) was a successful illustrator for many national magazines the first edition of Mark Twain's A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court. Beard also wrote and illustrated books of his own, including his best-known, The American Boys' Handy Book, 1882, and articles on woodcraft and nature study. He founded the Sons of Daniel Boone and co-founded the American Boy Scout movement in 1910 (started in England by Lord Baden-Powell. Beard, who "Americanized" the Boy Scout emblem by adding an American eagle and shield, served as National Scout Commissioner and on the Court of Honor until the end of his life. Mt. Beard, next to Mt. McKinley in Alaska, is named in his honor. The American Girls' Handy Book: How to Amuse Yourself and Others, by Lina and Adelia Beard, remains in print to this day. Its inclusion of vigorous outdoor activities for girls was revolutionary when first written. Slightly soiled. Vertical fold touches "el" of "Daniel." Otherwise, fine condition.
