DANIEL BEARD. Photograph signed: "Yours Truly/Dan Beard". Sepia, 3¼x4¼. Founder (1910) of the Boy Scouts of America, Beard (1850-1941) served for the remainder of his life as National Scout Commissioner and Chairman of the Court of Honor. Interested in work for boys, his best-known book, The American Boys' Handy Book, was published in 1882. He was known as "Uncle Dan" to boys all over the country. Beard was a successful illustrator for many national magazines and illustrated the first edition of Mark Twain's A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court. A painter and writer, much of his work focused on his love of nature and the outdoors. It was Beard's idea to Americanize the Boy Scout fleur-de-lis by adding the American eagle and shield; he obtained the patent for his design on July 4, 1911. Beard received the only Gold Eagle Badge ever awarded. Mt. Beard, in Alaska next to Mt. McKinley, is named in his honor. Slightly silvered, fine condition.
