DANIEL C. BEARD. TLS: "Dan Beard", 1p, 8½x11. Suffern, New York, 1939 October 23. On his personal imprinted letterhead to Mr. William Worrall, New York City. Begins: "My dear Willy Worrall". In full: "It was refreshing and stimulating to get a note from one of my old schoolmates, and I am snatching time out of a busy calendar to thank you for writing. There was no Frank Worrall; there was a Harry Worrall, a musician, but I don't think he was connected with your family. I trust that your good wife is rapidly recovering. Hastily but most cordially". Daniel Carter Beard (1850-1941) illustrated many books (among them the first edition of Mark Twain's Connecticut Yankee at King Arthur's Court) and taught animal drawing.He became interested in work for boys, and his best-known book, The American Boys' Handy Book, was published in 1882. Founder (1910) of the Boy Scouts of America, he served for the remainder of his life as National Scout Commissioner and Chairman of the Court of Honor. To boys all over the country he was known as "Uncle Dan". It was his idea to Americanize the Boy Scout fleur-de-lis by adding the American eagle and shield. Beard received the only Gold Eagle Badge ever awarded. Lightly creased with folds, vertical fold at the "e" and flourish of the "d" in Beard. Lightly soiled at right margin. ½-inch tears at upper and lower blank edges at left vertical fold, 1/8-inch tear at lower left blank edge. Overall, fine condition.
