Botanist Daniel Cady Eaton, one of the first professors of botany in the U. S., wrote this letter to his father, Major General Amos Beebe Eaton, from New Haven, Connecticut in 1870. In it, he talked about promoting the Scientific School at Yale University.
Autograph letter signed "D. C. Eaton". Pencil notation in top right corner of page 1. 3 pages, 4¾x7¾, 1 sheet folded, front and verso. New Haven, Connecticut, Jan. 31, 1870. In full: "My dear Father, I was in New York five days last week with Messrs Gilman & Brush trying to make people interested in our Scientific School. What our success was is yet to be found out. We had a meeting of 60 people, mostly rich men at the house of Wm Walter Phelps, (who married Miss Ellen Sheffield) and Mr. Gilman made them a speech, Coming home I found your letter waiting for me. I am sorry that so many Congressmen are continually trying to interfere in Army matters, and that is must annoy you greatly. I hope Congress will adjourn early ,& do nothing against your interests. Can you send me several (8 ro 10) copies of the R---s Mississippi scheme & Gen Humphrey's report thereon-? I want one for Prest. Woolsey , & one for each of several other gentlemen. I shall probably not move in the R---s matter before July or even September. Can you get me $5.00 in 10 cent stamps, &5$.00 in quarters? I enclose $10.00 for the purpose- Send, if you please each $5.00 worth in a separate letter. I hope this will not trouble you. In January I have 248 eggs - or 8 every day on an average- or from each laying hen ,(14 of them) 248/14 or 18 eggs in the month on an average Carrie is now quite well & strong ; she is going to New York tomorrow for two days- she send you a great deal of love, & wants to know how Nelly & Louise are getting on with Social matters- Fanny is doing very particularly well, Your affectionate son,". Daniel's father AMOS BEEBE EATON (1806-1877) was made Commissary General of the U. S. Army upon Brigadier General Joseph P. Taylor's retirement in 1864 and was brevetted a Major General on March 13, 1865. DANIEL CADY EATON (1834-1895) was one of the first professors of botany in the U. S., as well as Curator of the Yale Herbarium for 31 years. His books include the two-volume Ferns of North America. Eaton contributed botanical accounts to a number of geological surveys, as well. These included the United States and Mexican Boundary Survey (1848-1855), which set the border between the U. S. and Mexico after the Mexican-American War; Clarence King's Geological Survey (1867-1873), conducted in a 100-mile strip of land along that parallel between California and Wyoming; the Geographical Surveys West of the One Hundredth Meridian, conducted by George Wheeler; and the Geological Survey of California. Lightly toned, stained and creased. Show-through touches signature and body of letter. Light separations at top and bottom edges of spine. Folded twice and unfolded. Otherwise in fine condition.
