DANIEL CADY EATON
Botanist Daniel Cady Eaton, one of the first professors of botany in the U. S., wrote this letter to his father, Major General Amos Beebe Eaton, in 1869. In it, he talked about a visit to herbarium of his teacher Asa Gray at Harvard.
Autograph letter signed "D. C. Eaton". Pencil notation in top right corner of page 1. 3 pages, 4¾x7¾, 1 sheet folded, front and verso. Cambridge, Massachusetts, April 14, 1868. Addressed to General A. B. Eaton, Washington, D. C. In full: "My dear Father - I have now been here two days, and expect to stay a week or so longer- chiefly to compare some of Weston's plants with the specimens in Dr. Gray's herbarium. I have a little attic room in a boarding-house,and would feel quite like a bachelor, if I had not a dear little wife and a sweet little baby - who are just now at 34 West 26th St, where I expect to join them next week. Mr. Wright, who has the herbarium in charge, tells me that Dr. Gray will probably be coming home late in the autumn- I suppose Fanny will soon be in New Haven with her children. Carrie & I are anticipating a great deal of pleasure in seeing much of Fanny, & in having her little one teach our little girl how to play- Carrie writes me that when Bessy is asked where her papa is, she says, 'Bos'- With much love for Shelby, & for yourself I am ever your affectionate son". Eaton studied under ASA GRAY (1810-1888, born in Sauquoit, New York) at Harvard University. Gray was an American botanist whose discovery of close affinities between East Asian and North American floras was a key piece of evidence in favor of evolution. He created Harvard's Department of Botany in 1842, founded the Herbarium of Harvard University in 1864, which became known as Gray's Herbarium. Daniel's father AMOS BEEBE EATON (1806-1877) was made Commissary General of the U. S. Army upon Brigadier General Joseph P. Taylor's retirement in 1864 and was brevetted a Major General on March 13, 1865. DANIEL CADY EATON (1834-1895) was one of the first professors of botany in the U. S., as well as Curator of the Yale Herbarium for 31 years. His books include the two-volume Ferns of North America. Eaton contributed botanical accounts to a number of geological surveys, as well. These included the United States and Mexican Boundary Survey (1848-1855), which set the border between the U. S. and Mexico after the Mexican-American War; Clarence King's Geological Survey (1867-1873), conducted in a 100-mile strip of land along that parallel between California and Wyoming; the Geographical Surveys West of the One Hundredth Meridian, conducted by George Wheeler; and the Geological Survey of California. Lightly toned, stained and creased. Ink transference touches signature and body of letter. Show-through touches body of letter but not signature. Lightly discolored in top right corner of page 1. Otherwise in fine condition.
