Autograph letter signed "Daniel C. Eaton". 4 pages, 5x8, 1 sheet folded, front and verso. New Haven, Connecticut, April 30, 1871. In full: "My dear Father- We are all well now. Carrie has almost weaned her baby, and is gaining in strength. May rheumatism has almost gone, and I have begun my lectures & classes. Monday evening I am to address the N.Haven Historical Society on the 'Origin & History of our noxious weeds'. Mr. Ketcham now has three horses, and he has just bought a low open pony-phateon,so that that Carrie can drive out whenever she likes to. 'The Cow' gives plenty of good mil, and we are all doing well physically,& I hope mentally and morally too. Our garden is more than half made, and we have already had asparagus salad.& pie-plant from it. The hens give us an average of 15 eggs a day, and we have nearly four dozen little chickens already. We hope you and Mother will come and visit us in June, and shall be much disappointed if you do not. Cady & Alice are detained in London by the illness of the latter- pneumonia, Prof. Salisbury said it was, but added that Alice was mending. I saw Elisabeth & her family week before lat- all pretty well, & my good sister as good and kind as ever. Bessy is playing in this room , & say 'Tell Grandpa Eaton that he never saw any little baby-brother, did he?' The old Bacon house is being added, & converted into stores and officers. With Much love from all of uss to you & Mother- I am your affectionate son,". Daniel's father AMOS BEEBE EATON (1806-1877) was made Commissary General of the U. S.
