Gajdusek (1923-2008) shared the 1976 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine for his discovery that kuru was related to the Fore funeral ritual of eating the brains of the dead.Gajdusek, born in Yonkers, New York City of the National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, Maryland, and Blumberg, born in New York City in 1925, of the Institute for Cancer Research, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, shared the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine in 1976 for their discoveries concerning new mechanisms for the origin and dissemination of infectious diseases.
