He signs an autograph letter (1891) declining to give a commencement
address.
Autograph Letter signed: "D. C. Gilman". 1 page, 4¾x7½. Baltimore,
Maryland, 1891 May 11. On Johns Hopkins letterhead to "Professor
Willicott". In full: "I appreciate the honor of your invitation
received this morning, to deliver the address at Commencement - June 24 - but I
am prevented from acceptance as I have long been under an engagement at Ann
Arbor June 25th. With a message of respect to President Scott and all your
colleagues, especially those whom I have the pleasure of knowing, I remain, dear
Sir, yours truly". Daniel Coit Gilman (1831-1908) returned from diplomatic
service at the US Mission in St. Petersburg to become librarian and professor at
Yale. In 1872 he became the third President of the University of California,
and in 1875 the founding President of Johns Hopkins University, for which he
assembled a top-flight faculty. Johns Hopkins University Hospital and Medical
School were founded under his leadership. After a quarter century at Johns
Hopkins, he went on to become the first President of the Carnegie
Institute in Washington (1902-1904).Gilman's published books include
two influential works on university administration. Fold creases, not near
