Autograph Letter signed: "D C Gilman", 1 page, 4¼x3¼ card. Baltimore, June 14, n. y. On personal letterhead to "Dear Sir". In full: "You may expect by the steamer of Sat., July 9, rather a picturesque account of the celebration, on the supposition that the main facts will have preceded my letter by cable. The affair begins July 5 and continues several days. Yours very truly". Daniel Coit Gilman (1831-1908) returned from diplomatic service at the US Mission in St. Petersburg to become librarian and professor at Yale. In 1872 he became the third President of the University of California, and in 1875 the founding President of Johns Hopkins University, for which he assembled a top-flight faculty. Johns Hopkins University Hospital and Medical School were founded under his leadership. After a quarter century at Johns Hopkins, he went on to become the first President of the Carnegie Institute in Washington (1902-1904).Gilman's published books include two influential works on university administration.
