DAN PARKER

The Hall of Famer Sportscaster and sportswriter signs this typed letter in which he thanks a friend for having mentioned him and a friend in a little column, in blue ink

Typed Letter Signed: "Dan Parker" in blue ink. One page. 8½x11. Place: New York, New York. Date: November 4, 1948. On "New York Mirror" letterhead, to Louie, in full: "It was characteristically kind of you to give Jim Hurley and myself that nice little mention in your column last night. As the years wear on, I find out that the old friends are the best and I am happy to count you among my old reliables. With kindest personal regards, I am". In his 38 years as a columnist for "The New York Daily Mirror", and, at the very end of his career, "The New York Journal-American", Parker was a frequent crusader against corruption in boxing, wrestling and other sports. He is credited with doing the most in print to expose the crooked International Boxing Club (IBC), which in the 1950s had a stranglehold on boxing promotion nationwide. Parker wrote about every sport from baseball to horse racing. He was noted for his humor as well as his compassion for losers or the unlucky, but he was relentless in his exposure of payoffs and fixes. Parker was honored by his peers several times during his career. He won the Headliners' Award for sports writing in 1949; received the New York Newspaper Guild's Page One award in 1951, 1956 and 1961; and the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters award in 1960. He was inducted into the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Hall of Fame. Date stamp. Lightly creased. Unevenly faded. Frayed at left and bottom edge, with two ¼" horizontal tears on left and thin 1" paper strip missing from bottom. 1" paper separation at right edge of horizontal fold through center. Otherwise, fine condition.
