Autograph Letter Signed: "Daniel S. Lamont". 2 pages, 4¾x3 card, 1 sheet, front and verso, on a U. S. War Department card. Dated "Sept. 29". Addressed to General Porter. In full: "Dear General Porter: I have read the enclosed with interest - There is so much more recent material for the argument that I dont [sic] believe its use at this time could add much to the discussion - Very Sincerely yours". Lamont (1851-1905) was President Grover Cleveland's Secretary of War from 1893 to 1897. Lamont was also his private secretary when Cleveland was Governor of New York (1883-1885). Lightly toned, stained and soiled. Greeting, but not signature, is lightly smeared and has bled lightly in places but legible. Body of letter, but not signature, has bled lightly in places but legible. Mounting residue on page 1 touches body of letter but not signature. Otherwise, fine condition.
